Day one ready before the new hire arrives

An HR agent that turns a new hire's name, role, team and start date into the onboarding checklist, first week calendar, tool access list and buddy template, checks the record in Gusto, and creates the invitations only after HR approves, with Anthropic's Human Resources plugin in Claude Cowork

Function: HREffort: An afternoonPublished: 2026-10-23

The problem

A new hire's first week in a small company is improvised: the laptop is not ready, nobody booked the intro meetings, and the list of tools to grant access to lives in the head of the last person who did HR. The new person spends day one waiting and the manager spends it apologising.

How the agent works

  1. It starts

The manager or owner runs the /onboarding command of Anthropic's Human Resources plugin in Claude Cowork with the new hire's name, role, team and start date; the plugin README says this returns an onboarding checklist, a first week calendar, a tool access list and a buddy assignment template.

  2. The agent works

The agent reads the team's existing onboarding notes and the role description from the shared folder, and when the Gusto connector is connected it confirms the new hire already has a record and the right department (the connector lists list_employees, get_employee and get_departments) so the checklist matches what payroll has; a BambooHR or Rippling connector does the same job for companies that use those. It produces one pack: the checklist with an owner for each line (HR, manager, IT), the first week calendar with the intro meetings, the access list by tool, and a draft welcome message. HR reviews the pack and corrects anything the plugin assumed wrongly about the company, and only then does the agent create the calendar invitations through the Google Calendar or Microsoft 365 connector and post the access list in Slack for the IT owner.

  3. The result

Nothing is sent or created before HR approves, and the agent never edits payroll or employment records.

Worked example

The README of the human-resources plugin in the anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins repository on GitHub describes /onboarding as: provide the new hire's name, role, team and start date, get a comprehensive onboarding checklist, first week calendar, tool access list and buddy assignment template. The same README lists sister commands (/draft-offer, /policy-lookup, /performance-review, /comp-analysis, /people-report) and a connector table: HRIS (Workday, BambooHR, Rippling), calendar (Google Calendar, Microsoft 365), email (Gmail, Microsoft 365) and chat (Slack, Teams). The Gusto connector page on claude.com says it is made by Gusto, was added in February 2026, exposes 62 tools including list_employees, get_employee and get_departments, and that eligible customers can also run payroll in Claude. Neither page reports results, so measure your own: days from offer accepted to every access granted, and how many checklist lines HR has to correct per run.

Data protection. This use case touches personal data, so check the rules where you operate (for example GDPR, PDPA). A new hire's name, role, pay and start date are personal data. Keep the pack in a folder only HR and the manager can open, give the HRIS or Gusto connector read access only, do not paste the offer or salary into Slack, and check the data processing terms of Anthropic and your HR system for the rules where you operate.

Interviews booked without email ping pong

An HR agent that reads candidate replies in Gmail, finds a slot that suits every interviewer in Google Calendar, drafts the invitation and sends it only after the recruiter approves

HREffort: An afternoonGmail · Google Calendar · Claude

Scheduling one interview in a small company means a recruiter or the owner reading the candidate's reply, opening two or three colleagues' calendars, proposing times, waiting, and repeating when the candidate picks a slot that has since gone. Good candidates in Bangkok and Singapore often have other offers, and a three day scheduling loop is where they are lost.

HR stops being the company search engine

An HR agent that answers routine policy questions from the employee handbook in SharePoint, so leave, expense and benefit queries never reach the HR inbox

HREffort: About a weekClaude · Microsoft 365 · SharePoint

In a company of fifty to three hundred people the HR team answers the same questions every week: how many days of annual leave are left this year, can I claim a taxi after 9pm, what is the probation rule. The answers are all in the handbook and the HR policy folder, but nobody reads them, so HR spends hours a week acting as a search engine.

Shopee buyer chats answered, even after hours

A Shopee chat agent that reads buyer messages through the Shopee Open Platform, answers product and order status questions from the shop's own listing and order data in Thai or English, sends refunds and complaints to staff on LINE, and only drafts replies until the owner trusts it

Customer serviceEffort: About a weekShopee · Claude · LINEThailand

A Shopee shop in Thailand gets most buyer questions at night: does this come in size L, when will my order ship, is the two pack cheaper. The seller answers from a phone the next morning, by which time the buyer has bought elsewhere, and the ones who waited are already annoyed.
